Li-Ion Cell Ageing Analysis

I worked as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s Cell Engineering team to design, execute, and analyse design verification (DV) test programmes for lithium ion (Li-ion) battery cells. The goal of this project was to plan a series of tests that would generate parameters that could be used in the cell ageing model programmed into the battery management system of electrified vehicles. The accuracy of this model is crucial for range prediction and estimating the battery health in cars.

Based on my research and background knowledge of Li-ion batteries, I wrote test scripts that could be used to determine the necessary parameters. I liaised with an external supplier, which we supplied with battery cells and who ran the physical tests on over 1000 individual cells. This supplier would send us weekly data updates, which I analysed for inconsistencies. I communicated any issues directly to the supplier so they could be fixed before impacting our results.

Throughout the duration of the testing programme, I wrote MATLAB scripts to analyse the data and populate lookup tables that are currently used in the battery management systems of vehicles being produced today.
